If you fail to renew your subscription you will still be protected from the old exploits but not from any of the new ones. Also make sure that you do your annual renewal. Make sure you set the computer to update the files everyday and scan at least once a week. Take them home, uninstall your old version, install the new version and do the updates immediately. You can also go to your local office supply store or retail store and buy Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, or any number of other packages. It never expires as long as you pay the bill. This program combines anti-virus, anti-spyware, Windows Updates, Parental Controls, Firewall and reports all rolled into one package. My company offers SecureIt ( to all of our customers. They have your best interest at heart but they are also interested in protecting their network and resources. If your ISP offers a Security Suite consider taking advantage of their service. Install an antivirus / anti spyware program and make sure that you check it often to ensure that it is getting the important updates.Whatever methods you choose, make sure that you test the restore often, just to make sure that the data is really getting backed up. There is a Mac client available as well as a PC version. Mozy Pro adds more encryption, more security and faster upload and download and other features and enhancements at a very reasonable price. If you have more than 2 Gig of data or if you want to go to the next level of security you can use Mozy Pro. After that the backup is pretty quick due to the fact it will only back up the files that have changed. The first time your backup is going to take a while to run. The data is encrypted and stored on a secure server and the backups run daily at what ever time you choose. If you have less than 2 gig of data to backup you can use Mozy Home. Mozy is great for storing your files online. I do backups to disk using the old zip drives for all of the files that I want to be able to restore quickly. As for how to do the backups, that depends too. How often does your data change? How long would it take you to recreate it? These things are going to determine how often you will want to do backups. How often really depends on you and your data. That is Murphy’s Law when it comes to computers. You have a hard drive crash, you have a worm or other malicious program install and suddenly everything is gone. At any point in time you could have a catastrophe happen and you suddenly realize your data is gone. That said, here are some ideas…tips from me. I will add some of the best ideas to the diary. If I did, I would be rich and wouldn’t have to work again. Let me first say, I don’t have all of the answers. That is where the idea for this diary originated. I had stated that it was our responsibility to educate the home and small business computer users to the dangers of the Internet and how they can protect themselves.
